Marketplace Lending Regulation Framework Should Be Ready By This Fall Says The OCC


Comptroller of the Currency, Thomas J. Curry, at a summit this week in D.C. announced that the OCC should be finishing up a Marketplace Lending regulation framework in the fall. This regulation frame work is expected to fall within 8 key principles that include supporting "responsible innovation"--wherein "innovation meets the evolving needs of consumers, communities, and businesses in a manner consistent with safety and soundness and fair treatment of bank customers."

Marketplace Lending Investors Should Feel Encouraged


Investor returns on the main platforms have been strong, with historical yields between 5.20% and 8.37%, depending on the grade of loan. With U.S. interest rates at or close to zero, we have seen investors searching for alternatives to equities that offer both yield and diversification and for many, they are finding this in marketplace loans. So says Tom Grant a managing partner with Intelligent Lending Advisers in an op-ed piece on American Banker. Tom Grant also makes the case for why online retailers are proof that marketplace lending has sustainability.

Fundation Picks Up $100 Million Credit Facility From Goldman Sachs


The NY Based online small business lender, Fundation Group, secured $100 million credit facility from Goldman Sachs and plans to use the facility to fund new loans.

Rather than seeking borrowers via advertising, Fundation's strategy is to work through bank partnerships to fund loans.

MPL, Money360, Attributes Growth to Contractions in CMBS Market


Commercial Real Estate Lending Platform, Money360, in a press release on Wednesday announced that they "surpassed the $100 million mark in closed commercial real estate loans with the completion of $15.25 million in recently closed loans". The press release also mentioned that increased regulations has impacted the loan market. More than 100% of loans in this sector have been declined and, as a result, created an opportunity for non bank loan offers.

Korea's Online Lending Market is Booming


Nobody saw it coming. The Korean P2P Lending market doubled to 72.4 billion won ($63.7 million) in 3 months but is leading to worries of how the money is being invested. Now the Korean government is scrambling to put regulation in place to protect investors.

ABA CEO Defends Bank/Fintech Partnerships


Rob Nichols, President and CEO of the American Bankers Association, in a Tuesday Congressional hearing related to marketplace lending, said that banks bring a certain trust element to the partnerships with fintech firms, but also conceded that it's a win-win arrangement.

Europe's 2nd Largest MPL Reports Strong Growth


Marketplace lending isn't suffering from lower demand everwhere. The German marketplace lender auxmoney, founded in 2007, said loan volume increased from €39.3 million in the first half 2015 to €79.5 million in the first half of 2016. That's an increase of more than 100 percent.

OnDeck Capital Inc (ONDK) Stock Climbed after Analyst Initiation


Analysts John Rowan and Manu Srivareerat from Janney, believe that OnDeck--currently the only publicly traded small business lender--have plenty room to grow, with only 20% of small business lenders applying for loans online. The analysts also had high praise for OnDeck's "giant repository of value creation records," called GROVER a grading methodology platform that "tracks data on more than 10 million small businesses over a period of eight years and provides intelligent decisioning across multiple business functions.”

Bottom line some banks are looking at the $22 Billion in US Consumer and Business loans originated last year by Online Lenders and are thinking, "This could have been us!" Wells Fargo in May launched there FastFlexSM Small Business Loan platform that offers "fast-decision loan that is funded as soon as the next business day".

Lisa Stevens, a 27-year company veteran, is an executive vice president and holds leadership positions across the country for Wells Fargo. Stevens is president for Pacific Midwest, which includes the states of California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska and 17 states throughout the Midwest and Rocky Mountains. In addition, she oversees Regional Marketing nationally for Regional Banking. She also is the head of Small Business Banking, which provides a full range of financial services to 3 million business customers with annual revenues up to $5 million.

Canada's Scotiabank to License Kabbage Lending Technology


What does Scotiabank, ING and Santander have in common, aside from being multinational banks? They have all licensed Kabbage's lending technology. Scotiabank, one of Canada's largest banks have just recently announced that they will be offering small business loans via Kabbage's lending technology to businesses in Canada and Mexico and the Scotiabank loans through this technology will be co-branded with Kabbage.

Could the MPL Sector's Growth Cause U.S. Lending Standards to Deteriorate?


The FSOC seems to think so. This year the Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC) has incorporated into its technology report more than a passing mention of the marketplace lending's rapid rise. Some concerns include "primary tool of underwriting by algorithm has never been tested in a downturn and there is a risk that investors "may prove to be less willing than other types of creditors to fund new lending during times of stress". They also mentioned that the growth of the MPL sector could also cause an erosion in the U.S. Lending Standards. And there's a possibility that traditional lenders may lower their standards to bring borrowers in.

New Entrant to MPL Australian Company Bigstone To Finance SMEs


Formed by a group of former bank execs, Bigstone is hoping to tap into the 83% of small businesses in Australia having difficulty obtaining credit with reasonable interest rates. Bigstone's platform will be able to give borrowers a quote in 3 minutes and a loan in 30 minutes.

BB&T Going Against Trend in Fast-Decision Loans


BB&T is all about taking risks, but not when it comes to credit. Even though they have an online portal to accept mortgage, credit cards and home equity lines, their is no rapid decision happening for applications through their systems compared to what the lending platforms offer. After their ongoing review of the processes being used by lending platfoms they are still not comfortable with the aspects of these platforms relating to risk.

ICBA Wants Regulatory Flexibility on par with Online Lenders' 'Regulatory Advantage'
