Little Fish + Big Pond = No Problem: Staying Competitive with Better Mobile Apps

Until recently, it’s been difficult for small to mid-sized financial institutions to compete with the big banks due to their reach and high tech mobile banking offerings. Thankfully, the latter is no longer out of reach for small to mid-sized banks and credit unions. In this presentation, Dawn Brummett of ORNL Federal Credit Union (FCU) and Burley Kawasaki of Kony Inc., a leading enterprise mobility company, will discuss how a 68-year-old federal credit union based in Eastern Tennessee developed an innovative mobile banking strategy that has not only improved customer retention, but also has helped attract new members, including tech-savvy millennials.  Responding to customer loss, ORNL FCU partnered with enterprise mobile app development company Kony, Inc. to build a mobile app for its members. By integrating its personal financial management software, ORNL FCU built a user-friendly member app that allows members easily to view and manage all their finances, not just ORNL FCU accounts, via their mobile devices of choice.   To kick things up a notch, ORNL FCU worked with Kony to include a unique community events feature in the app, allowing members and non-members alike to access information and tickets for local events such as the Dogwood Arts annual Rhythm ‘N Blooms Music Festival. ORNL FCU’s app was the official guide for the festival.

  • The increasingly notable industry shift to mobile banking and why an enterprise-wide mobility strategy is no longer optional
  • What small to mid-sized financial institutions can do to stay relevant and creative with mobile apps
  • The capabilities of mobile app development platforms today and how they can be used to retain members, attract new customers and provide unique mobile experiences
