Small merchants, such as BeesBros, a Utah-based bee-keeping business, were the first merchants to start accepting Bitcoin because of its efficiency as a payment network and the political bent surrounding the technology. But as the use cases for Bitcoin became more prevalent, larger merchants, like Wordpress and Overstock.com began accepting as well. And several payment gateways are making it simple for merchants to accept any digital currency while eliminating the volatility risk.
