A relative newcomer to the world of financial services, “peer-to-peer” lending has outgrown its name and includes a wide variety of players, ranging from crowdfunding platforms to the smallest of micro-lenders to large institutional players for whom “P2P” is an attractive asset class. As the stakeholders in this new ecosystem look to maximize opportunities, there is an increased appetite for a deeper understanding of the industry, how value is created, who the other players are, their motivations and needs.

The wide range of participants in the P2P value chain has raised a series of fascinating legal, regulatory, strategic and operational questions. Although much has been written and discussed about individual elements, there is some question as to how it all comes together. How big is P2P?  How big could it be?  Who are the players?  What do they do?  Where do non-traditional lenders, banks, service providers, and the legal and regulatory frameworks intersect?

This workshop will be made up of two components:

  • It will provide participants a basic grounding, a set of facts and a common vocabulary —a true 101 view—with which to explore this space.
  • Through a diverse panel  it will lay out key concepts, benefits and challenges of “peer to peer” lending by looking at full value chain of related activities, the key players, what those players and their clients get out of it, how and why it works, as well as why and how it might not work.
